Enjoying Long Island does not have to be expensive. Long Island offers a wide variety of free events that are just waiting to be explored. Want to keep your kids entertained, too? These activities are perfect for your kids, relatives, or friends, and won’t cost you a dime.

Watch the Sunset Beachside

During the summer months, you may have to pay to visit some of those lovely Long Island beaches (especially if you are not a local). Before Memorial Day and after Labor Day, and around 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. most nights, you can sit on the sand in Long Beach for free as the sunsets. Looking for a different scene? Visit areas like Port Washington and Cold Spring Harbor, where you can sit and watch the stunning sunset straight from the waterfront.

Sip Your Way Through Long Island’s Wine Country

The North Fork and the South Fork are jam-packed with vineyards and wineries. Although many wineries charge a fee for tastings, some offer special events and music for FREE. Try The Wine Stand at Wölffer Estate Vineyard in Sagaponack during the warmer months for live music on Fridays and Saturdays or check out at a few other of our favorite vineyards on the island.

Explore the Island’s Natural Beauty

In addition to hiking trails like those in Garvies Point Preserve that lead down to a quiet beach, Long Island has some incredible wildlife refuges like the Oyster Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Uplands Farm, part of The Nature Conservancy, is home to a double-loop trail surrounded by red cedars, oaks, hickory trees, and other tall trees. Seasonally, butterflies and birds can be seen flocking to the area’s pools, as well as frogs and salamanders.

You can also enjoy walking the trails found in Long Island gardens like the Bailey Arboretum and Clark Botanic Garden, which carry no admission, but if you are feeling generous, Clark Botanic Garden always appreciates donations.
